Bibliotherapy: Reading & Writing to Reconnect with Joy
This is not your usual neighborhood or school-based book club. This is bibliotherapy. Dustin Grinnell wrote this in The Boston Globe a while back, “Bibliotherapy, or reading for therapeutic effect, dates back to the ancient Greeks, who inscribed over the entrance of the library in Thebes a phrase that means ‘healing place for the soul.’”
Come to a reading-centered 90 minute mini-retreat on three evenings over three weeks where we will use reading and writing about our reading as a ‘healing place for the soul’ and as a safe space for exploring and deepening our why as educators.
Our theme for this series will be reconnecting with joy. Our central texts will be Karen Walrond’s The Lightmaker’s Manifesto: How to Work for Change Without Losing Your Joy and Ross Gay’s Inciting Joy: Essays.
There are no requirements to read the books prior to the sessions. We will be exploring key excerpts together, so it is fine if you have not had time to read them beforehand. These mini-retreats are designed to give you space to explore significant parts of these texts and the concept of joy through personal writing about key excerpts. We will also explore questions the books raise in safe, structured listening circles.
