Campfire Style Read Aloud: Ross Gay’s Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude
Experience the power of reading aloud a book of poetry front to back. How rare that we read an entire poetry collection cover to cover, and how rare for grown ups to gather for read alouds these days—that is usually just something young children experience in a classroom on a carpet with a teacher or with a beloved adult before bedtime, or that family and friends enjoyed in front of a fireplace after dinner back in the “old days.”
Along the way, we will take time out to remember some of our pivotal read aloud experiences, to write about our own gratitude jumping off from some of Ross Gay’s lines, and to read aloud using different fluency strategies that help to deepen our experience with the text.
All you need is a copy of Ross Gay’s book and a candle if you don’t have a a campfire or a fireplace nearby. You will leave with first hand experiences to inspire read alouds in your own classroom community.
